Summer is approaching at lightning speed and you want to make sure you don’t get stranded somewhere on a hot road in the middle of the afternoon. We recommend a handful of vehicle maintenance services now to make sure your car, truck, or SUV can handle the White Bear Lake, MN, summer heat.
Air Conditioner Service
You haven’t used your automobile’s AC for months and you might have a shock when you turn it on. If the AC isn’t maintained properly, it might not cool the air coming through the vents or you may smell mold. The compressor and fan could also fail and you might have a leak coming from the drain hose. All of these things add up to an unpleasant experience once you turn on the AC for the first time.
Brake Inspection
If you haven’t had a brake inspection recently now is the time to do it. Brake systems can overheat, especially if the roads are super hot. Here’s the scary part: Your brakes will fail if the fluid heats to its boiling point. A brake inspection will identify issues such as dirty or low brake fluid and worn brake pads, all of which can overheat the brakes and affect their performance.
Coolant Flush
Keep your engine cool in hot weather with a radiator flush and fill. You should have your radiator flushed every 30,000 miles, but even if you had it flushed recently, a check to make sure everything else in the system is okay is ideal before summer. Even with new coolant, the radiator fan or thermostat could have problems that will cause your car, truck, or SUV to overheat.
Oil Change
Coolant isn’t the only thing that keeps your engine cool; motor oil also helps keep the temperature down. Every 3,000 miles is still the rule for oil changes. If you live in a super-hot area where the mercury rises above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, it might be a good idea to switch from conventional to synthetic motor oil at your next oil change. Synthetic can take the heat better.
Tire Rotation
Finally, your vehicle’s tires can only take so much heat, too, especially if the tread is worn down. Hot roads will blow out bald tires, and you do not want to lose control of your vehicle at any time. Get the tires inspected, rotated, and balanced before summer to ensure they won’t suffer when the asphalt gets much hotter than it has been.
